Search page

The full results page, reached by pressing Enter in the search drawer or following the link at the bottom of its results.

Open it from the template dropdown in the theme editor.

What it returns

Products, pages and blog posts, each shown in a form suited to what it is — products as product cards, posts as article cards, pages as a title and excerpt.

Columns (desktop) sets the grid width. Mobile uses two columns.

Filtering and sorting

Filters and sorting appear when the results contain products, and are hidden when they do not — there is nothing useful to sort a list of blog posts by price.

Choosing a filter or a sort order narrows the results to products only. That is a limitation of what can be sorted, not a bug: a page has no price and an article has no availability, so they cannot take part.

Filters come from the same Search & Discovery setup as the collection page.

Content

Heading and Subheading appear above the results. They are shown before a search has been made, so the subheading is a chance to point someone somewhere useful rather than leaving them with an empty box.

When nothing matches

The page shows a message including the term that was searched, so the customer can see what was actually looked for — often the fastest way to spot a typo.

Read your zero-result searches

Analytics → Reports → Top online store searches in the admin lists what customers typed, including searches that returned nothing. Those are the words your catalog does not know, and each one is either a synonym to add in Search & Discovery or a product you do not stock.

Improving results

The theme displays results; Shopify decides what matches. To change matching:

• Add synonyms in Search & Discovery, so strimmer finds string trimmer.
• Use boosts to lift particular products for particular terms.
• Check that product titles, descriptions and tags use the words customers use, not only your internal names.
