FAQ
Common questions about setting up and running the theme. For something that is not working as expected, see Troubleshooting.
Getting started
Do I need to know how to code?
No. Everything in this documentation is done through the theme editor. The Custom Liquid section exists for people who do want to write code, and it is the only place that expects it.
Will installing the theme change my live store?
No. A theme installs into your library unpublished. Your live store carries on unchanged until you publish. See Install the theme.
Why does my store look nothing like the demo?
The theme brings its layout — which sections appear and how they are arranged. It does not bring products, images, collections or menus, because those live in your store rather than in the theme.
Import the demo content covers what to fill in and in what order.
Can I use the theme on more than one store?
A license covers one store. See License and transfers.
Products and collections
How do I show a "New" badge on a product?
Add the tag new to the product in the admin. The tag is matched exactly, so New with a capital or New Arrival will not work.
Nothing removes it for you — take the tag off when the product is no longer new. See Product badges.
How do I get color swatches on product cards?
Name the product option Color, then set a color or an image on each option value under Products → Variants in the admin. The theme picks them up automatically. Colour also works.
Why is the Complementary products section empty?
The pairings are set in Shopify's free Search & Discovery app, not in the theme. Until you set them for a product, the section has nothing to show and hides itself. See Complementary products.
How do I change how many products are on a collection page?
Either per template, in the collection section's settings, or store-wide under Pagination.
How do I add filters to a collection?
Filters come from the free Search & Discovery app, under Filters. The theme displays whatever you enable there. See Collection page.
Design
Where do I change the colors?
Under Colors. The theme uses color schemes rather than individual colors, so setting a scheme changes every section that uses it.
Can one section have different colors from the rest?
Yes. Most sections have their own background color setting that overrides the scheme for that section alone. Leave it blank to follow the scheme.
How do I stop images being cropped oddly?
Set a focal point on the image in Shopify — hover the image in the admin and choose the focal point — and the theme keeps that part when it crops. There are also fallback focus settings under Product cards and the other card groups.
Can I turn off the animations?
Yes, under Appearance. It also makes the store faster, which is covered on that page.
Content
Where do menus come from?
Content → Menus in the admin. The theme only chooses between menus you have already built. See Header.
Why isn't my page content showing?
The page.about and page.faq templates are built from sections rather than from page content, so anything typed into the page editor will not appear. Use the plain page template, or move the content into the section settings. See Standard pages.
Where do contact form submissions go?
To the address under Settings → Store details → Sender email in the admin, not to anything set in the theme.
Where do newsletter signups go?
Into your Shopify customer list with marketing consent, under Customers. Nothing is sent automatically — connect Shopify Email or another app to send to the list.
Apps and code
Will apps work with this theme?
Apps that use Shopify's app blocks can be added through the theme editor like any other block. Apps that ask you to paste code into theme files can go into a Custom Liquid section.
Can I edit the theme's code?
Yes, but duplicate the theme first and work on the copy. Code edits are yours to maintain and are not carried across by theme updates — see Update the theme.
My store feels slow. What helps most?
In order of effect:
- Right-sized images. Uploading a 4000-pixel photo for a 600-pixel slot costs the visitor the whole file.
- Fewer sections on the home page. Each one adds images to load.
- Turning off scroll animation in Appearance, which stops an animation library loading.
- Reviewing your apps. Apps that add storefront scripts often cost more than anything in the theme.
Updates and support
How do I update the theme?
See Update the theme. If you have not edited the code, Shopify can apply updates for you and keep your settings.
Will updating lose my customizations?
Your settings and section layout are kept when Shopify applies the update. Edits made directly to theme files are not — back them up first.
What does theme support cover?
Bugs in the theme, and questions about how to use it. Custom development, app conflicts and changes to code you have written are outside it. See License and transfers.
