Troubleshooting
Things that look broken but usually are not. If your question is about how to set something up rather than why it is not working, try the FAQ.
A section is missing from "Add section"
Some sections read from the page they are on, so they are only offered where that makes sense:
| Section | Only on |
|---|---|
| Product tabs | Product templates |
| Complementary products | Product templates |
| You may also like | Product templates |
| Related posts | Article templates |
A product recommendations section on the home page would have no product to recommend against, so it is not offered there.
A section is empty
Complementary products — the pairings are set in the Search & Discovery app, not the theme. Nothing set means nothing to show.
You may also like — Shopify generates these from order history. A new store has little to go on, and the section hides itself rather than showing filler.
Recently viewed — the list is kept in the visitor's own browser. It is empty until they have viewed something. Browse a few products and look again.
Best selling products / Tabbed products — check the section has a collection selected, and that the collection has products in it.
The newsletter popup won't show again
Closing it sets a cookie that suppresses it for seven days, so it will not reappear for you.
Open the store in a private window to see it again. It also only appears on the home page, by design. See Newsletter popup.
The mega menu doesn't open
Trigger link has to match the menu item's name exactly, including capitalization. If the menu says Shop, then shop will not connect.
Check the spelling against Content → Menus in the admin rather than against what you remember naming it.
The contact map is blank
The section needs Google Maps' embed URL, which is not the link from the address bar and not the whole <iframe> tag.
Take only the address inside src="..." — it starts https://www.google.com/maps/embed?pb=. Full steps are on Contact map.
My page content isn't showing
The page.about and page.faq templates are built from sections, not from page content. Anything typed into the page editor will not appear.
Either switch the page to the plain page template, or move the content into the section settings. See Standard pages.
Images look blurry or wrongly cropped
Blurry usually means the source image is smaller than the space it fills. Upload at roughly twice the displayed size so it stays sharp on high-resolution screens.
Wrongly cropped means the focal point is in the wrong place. Set one on the image itself in Shopify and the theme will keep that part. The card focus settings are only a fallback for images with no focal point of their own.
The "New" badge isn't appearing
The tag has to be exactly new. New, NEW ARRIVAL and new-arrival will not match. Check the tag on the product in the admin, and check the badge is enabled under Product badges.
The free shipping message is wrong
The threshold in Cart settings only controls the message. The actual free shipping rate is set under Settings → Shipping and delivery in the admin.
They are not linked. If you change one, change the other, or the cart will promise something checkout does not honor.
The currency or language selector is missing
Both only appear when there is something to choose. If your store sells in one currency and one language, Shopify has nothing to offer and the selector stays hidden however the setting is set.
Add markets and languages under Settings → Markets in the admin.
Comments aren't appearing on blog posts
Two possible causes:
- Comments are disabled for that blog, under Content → Blog posts → Manage blogs.
- Comments are set to require approval, so they wait for you in the admin. The customer still sees a confirmation, which is why this often arrives as "my comment vanished".
A hover effect does nothing on my phone
By design. Hover effects, pause-on-hover and second-image-on-hover all need a cursor, and touch devices have none. They are not broken — there is simply no hover state to trigger them.
The store is slow
See the FAQ for what helps most, in order.
Before blaming the theme, check your apps. Storefront apps add scripts to every page, and a store carrying several of them will be slower than the theme alone regardless of settings.
Something broke after I edited the code
Restore from your backup — the duplicate you made before editing.
If you did not make one, and the theme is unpublished, install a fresh copy and set it up again. If it is live, publish your previous theme first to get the store working, then fix the copy at your own pace.
This is why Update the theme asks you to duplicate before you start.
Still stuck
If none of the above fits, get in touch through the support form linked from the theme listing. It helps to include:
- Your store URL, and a preview link if the theme is unpublished.
- Which page and which section.
- What you expected and what happened instead.
- A screenshot, and whether it happens on desktop, phone or both.
