404 page

Shown when someone reaches a URL that does not exist — a mistyped address, an old link, a product you removed.

Open it from the template dropdown in the theme editor.

What it is built from

An image and a set of blocks. Greenix ships with a heading, a line of text and a Back to home button.

Keep the button, or something like it. A 404 page that only apologises leaves the visitor with the back button as their sole option, and many of them will use it to leave the store.

Writing it

Say plainly that the page is missing, then offer a route onward. Two or three short lines is the whole job.

Avoid blaming the visitor. Most 404s are caused by a link that changed on your side, not by anyone mistyping.

Adding a way forward

The template takes ordinary sections as well as blocks, so you can offer more than a link home. Useful additions:

• Best selling products — something to look at rather than a dead end.
• Featured collections — the main routes into the catalog.

The header is present on this page, so search is already available from the search drawer.

Finding out why people land here

Discontinued products are the usual cause: the URL stays in Google and in customers' bookmarks long after the product goes.

Shopify can redirect those instead of showing a 404. Under Content → Menus → URL redirects in the admin, point the old URL at a sensible replacement — the product that succeeded it, or its collection. A redirect is always a better experience than a well-designed 404 page.
