Update the theme

A new version of Greenix arrives as a separate theme in your library. It does not overwrite the one you are using, and it does not carry your settings across by itself.

Read this page before you start. Updating is straightforward, but the order of the steps is what protects your work.

Before you update

Check whether the theme has code edits. If you or a developer edited the theme's files, those edits exist only in your copy and will not survive an update. Note what was changed and why, so it can be reapplied afterwards.

Keep a backup. Go to Online Store → Themes, find your live theme, and click ⋯ → Duplicate. Name it something like Greenix 1.0.0 — backup. This costs nothing and gives you a way back.

If your theme has no code edits

Shopify can update Theme Store themes for you. When an update is available, a banner appears on the theme in Online Store → Themes, and Shopify applies it while keeping your section layout and settings.

This is the safest route, and it is only offered when the theme has not been modified.

If your theme has code edits

Update manually:

  1. Duplicate your live theme as a backup, as above.
  2. Add the new version — see Install the theme. It arrives unpublished.
  3. Set it up. Reapply your logo, colors, fonts, menus and section layout.
  4. Reapply your code edits to the new copy, one at a time.
  5. Preview thoroughly — see the checklist below.
  6. Publish the new version.

Keep the backup for a few weeks before deleting it.

Copying settings across

Copying config/settings_data.json from the old theme to the new one moves your theme settings in one step, but only do this between versions where the settings have not changed. If a setting was renamed or removed, the copy can leave the theme in a state the editor cannot fix. When in doubt, set things by hand.

What to check before publishing

Walk through these on both desktop and a phone:

  • Home page — every section renders, images are not missing.
  • A product with variants — swatches change the image and price, add to cart works.
  • A collection — filters, sorting and pagination.
  • Cart — add, change quantity, remove, reach checkout.
  • Search — the drawer and the search results page.
  • Menus — including any mega menu.
  • Header and footer — logo, links, social icons.
